The Porte d’Ardon is one of the medieval city gates of Laon. The current structure dates from the 13th and 14th centuries. Originally, this gate was called “Porte Royée” because of its proximity to the royal palace of Laon. The gate consists of a châtelet with a portcullis and used to have doors. There was also a barbican, but this has now disappeared. Under the gate there was a fountain and wash houses, some of which still exist. The Porte d’Ardon was classified as a historical monument in 1909.

It was called the royal gate because of its proximity to the royal palace of Laon. It is a double door, it consists of a gate with a portcullis, and had leaves. It was preceded by a barbican which has now disappeared. The gate is attested from the 10th century but the current structure dates from the 13th and 14th centuries. A gate was built in front of it in 1741: sculpted by Charles Hottin, it had pillars topped with lions and representations of the arms of France. It was destroyed in 1858. Below the door were a fountain and wash houses: the only ones remaining today, they were covered in the 19th century.
