Sauveterre-de-Guyenne is a bastide. A bastide is a type of French medieval town, founded in the 13th and 14th centuries, primarily in southwestern France. A bastide is characterized by a rectangular street pattern that divides the town into eight blocks around a central market square. The Treaty of Paris (1229) prohibited the building of walls around new towns. Many bastides were provided with some form of fortification, such as gates, after their founding to provide some protection during turbulent times. Most bastides had only local significance and did not develop into large towns. As a result, many bastides, such as that of Sauveterre-de-Guyenne, have been preserved in their original state.

A beautiful tour along the canal. About 5 km before, there's a great tapas bar on the other side of the canal. You shouldn't miss it.

Very pleasant route, mostly asphalted in the shade and at the water's edge of course. However, the Lot-et-Garonne part of this route is more bumpy, the roots lift the tar and make bumps that are sometimes quite significant, so don't be surprised. Another negative point, it is sometimes difficult to find free access water taps, even in the nautical stops you will most of the time have to go and ask for water in the bars or restaurants along the track, or leave the track to go directly to the village cemeteries.

Old railway bridge spanning the Canal Lateral and its greenway, now occupied by the "SO Vélo" greenway connecting Marmande to Casteljaloux. Possibility of joining the Canal Lateral greenway 100m further to the South (direction Casteljaloux), then follow the signs.

Perfect for a little break by the canal. 2 benches, hoops to put bikes on and a trash can. But no tables or water tap.

We spent one night at Maison Berry during our cycling trip on the Canal des 2 Mers. Although the accommodation is very simple, it was perfect for 3 cyclists. The best part was the welcome received by Rebecca, very friendly and super welcoming. The food was also perfect. One of the best stops in this area.

Thanks to such a construction, human or animal muscle power could be easily replaced by a watercourse - natural or artificially created - in order to grind grain into corn, for example. There are essentially two different ways of driving watermills: Either the water simply hits the blades of the water wheel from below to set it in motion; or the water is guided above the wheel and falls onto the blades; this type of construction is more efficient due to natural gravity.
