This region has hundreds of small fishponds, once created by monks in the Middle Ages. Today they form a patchwork of water, reeds and forest – a paradise for birds, cyclists and those seeking peace and quiet. You cycle along quiet banks, see herons take flight and enjoy local specialities such as fried carp along the way.

Right next to the Largue cycle path lies this cosy nature centre in Altenach. You will find a short educational walk, a playground, picnic benches and a small exhibition about the nature of Alsace. Ideal to stretch your legs, have a bite to eat or go exploring with children. Free admission and open on Sunday afternoons in the summer months.

I haven't been here for at least 45 years. At the time there was a tavern. We could have a drink there. go pedal boating. On Sunday there were people on the terrace and children laughing. Today, even if the site remains beautiful, there is not much left of this happy place. If any members have any information, I'm interested.

The Maison de la Nature du Sundgau is an educational center open to all. It aims to raise awareness about the environment and nature, in particular through workshops, events, outings or other activities. The timetables are available on the website: https://www.maison-nature-sundgau.org/.

The Sundgau is full of artificial ponds. In general, they are quite small and were dug in the 12th century by Cistercian monks. The goal ? Found a fish-farming tradition so as not to consume meat during Lent.

The Maison de la Nature du Sundgau is an excellent site to learn more about the regional fauna and flora. A visit is a must!

La Belle Île pond is actually a series of ponds with wooden walkways that allow you to reach the islets. There are several marked walks to do in the area.
