Pretty little town with character!

This church was not dedicated to one of the many people we venerate as blessed or saints and ask for their heavenly intercession with God, or - like so many French churches - to the Mother of God (“Notre-Dame”). The patronage here was chosen to be the incarnate Son of God, Jesus Christ himself, and the church in Bellême was dedicated to him under the title “SAINT SAUVEUR” - that is, as the Redeemer and Savior (Latin: “Salvator”).

Religious building or fortified castle? The church of St George is surprising! Of Romanesque origin (11th century), the places have been transformed over the centuries, notably during the wars of religion where the church was fortified. A front part is built with a complete defense system: watchtowers (small turrets), loopholes and barred doors. These defense elements narrowly escaped destruction in the 17th century. Inside you can admire a Virgin and Child, Saint Barbara, Saint Paul and of course the statue of Saint George. You will also be able to observe the remains of one of the Aunais crosses. The building presents many other treasures: old clock mechanism, exhibition on the Cassini family, liturgical vestments...

In the heart of Perche, Bellême, a medieval village, is full of charm. Its location, on a hill, and its proximity to the forest that bears its name, make it a village integrated into the landscape. This of course reinforces its fine reputation.

Among all the villages in the region, Bellême is undoubtedly one of the most charming. No wonder it was the capital of the ancient county of Perche. Wandering through the medieval atmosphere of its streets is a delight.

If I lived there, I think this is where I would come to stroll, to find inspiration, or simply to offer a little rest for my soul.

This door probably existed from the origin of the fortification of the city. The current building was however rebuilt, at the same time as the enclosure, around 1480. It has a function that is both ostentatious and legal. It actually served as a place of collection of the granting (tax on goods) under the Old Regime. Its monumentality and its decor express the importance given to the city at the time.

Former capital of Perche built on a spur, Bellême is a medieval city of character. Passing under the 15th century porch you can stroll along rue Ville Close with its colorful facades and its 17th, 18th and 19th century mansions. At the top of the town, remains of the castle walls are still visible. From the Place de l'Europe (former castle square), you will also have a beautiful view of the flat tiled roofs and the Saint-Sauveur church. Source: https://www.perchenormand.fr
