6월 14, 2025, Pipers' Memorial Longueval
The Pipers Memorial in Longueval is a special tribute to all pipers who died during the First World War, regardless of their regiment or origin. It was unveiled on 20 July 2002 and stands in the village square, just off the Rue de Bazentin. The bronze statue, designed by Andy De Comyn, shows a piper in full uniform climbing out of a trench playing—a powerful symbol of courage and moral support for troops under fire. Plaques around the plinth list the regiments that lost pipers, and the memorial also remembers heroes such as Piper James Richardson VC, who led his battalion into the attack with his music and was later killed trying to retrieve his bagpipes. It is a rare monument that honours not only military valour but also cultural identity and tradition. A place where music and memory come together in stone and bronze.

The Mémorial à la 18e Division britannique consists of a stone obelisk with bronze plaques on each side. These plaques commemorate the officers, non-commissioned officers and men of the division and record the battles in which the division fought. Interestingly, the 18th British Division played a crucial role in the Battle of the Somme, suffering significant losses but making important territorial gains.

6월 14, 2025, Mémorial de Thiepval
Officially part of the Historial de la Grande Guerre, the Thiepval Museum is located near the impressive Thiepval Memorial and offers an in-depth look at the Battle of the Somme of 1916. Opened in 2016 to mark the centenary of this bloody battle, the museum comprises seven thematic areas, each highlighting a different aspect of the war. One of the highlights is the 60-metre-long panoramic comic strip by artist Joe Sacco, which vividly depicts the events of 1 July 1916. Visitors will gain insight not only into the military strategies, but also into the human suffering and the culture of remembrance surrounding the missing of the Somme.

5월 10, 2025, Lochnagar Crater
The Cratère de Lochnagar, an impressive war memorial, was created by a huge mine blown up by the British Royal Engineers on 1 July 1916, as part of the Battle of the Somme. The explosion marked the beginning of the battle and left a crater 90 metres in diameter and 25 metres deep. Interestingly, the crater was named after Lochnagar Street, the trench from which the tunnel was dug. The crater is now a preserved site of remembrance and a religious service is held there every year on 1 July in memory of those who died.

5월 10, 2025, Monument aux Tyneside
The Tyneside Monument commemorates the soldiers of the Tyneside Irish and Tyneside Scottish Brigades who fought in the First World War. The monument was erected in memory of the men who died during the Battle of the Somme. An interesting anecdote is that the Tyneside Brigades suffered heavy losses on 1 July 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Many of the soldiers came from the same communities, which had a great impact on their home front.

5월 10, 2025, Mémorial de Thiepval
An interesting anecdote is that the monument was inaugurated in 1932 by the Prince of Wales and the French President Albert Lebrun. The monument consists of a series of arches supported by sixteen massive square pillars, on which the names of the missing soldiers are engraved. At the foot of the monument is a Franco-British military cemetery with 600 graves: 300 French and 300 British soldiers.

4월 26, 2025, Méaulte Military Cemetery
The Méaulte Military Cemetery was built in December 1915 and was in use until February 1917, although after the fighting of 1918 and the armistice, more bodies were buried there. It contains 312 graves (303 British, 2 Canadian, 1 Australian, and 6 Indian), including 21 unidentified bodies. The village of Méaulte was occupied by the British from 1915 until March 26, 1918, when it was captured by the Germans. 4월 19, 2025, Monument aux Tyneside
The Tyneside Memorial (a region in northern England, near Newcastle) was erected on the site of the British trenches at the start of the Battle of the Somme. It commemorates two brigades of the 34th British Division (the Tyneside Scottish and Tyneside Irish) who lost 60% of their men attacking to the sound of bagpipes at this precise location on July 1, 1916, believing the enemy barbed wire had been destroyed by an artillery barrage. It reads: "Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." "Here, opposite this monument, on July 1, 1916, the Tyneside Scottish and Tyneside Irish engaged the enemy for several hours. The fortunes of the fighting swung in and out, but before nightfall, the two Tyneside Brigades, with the help of other units of the 34th Division, achieved their objective. Do not think that the struggle and their sacrifice were in vain."

4월 19, 2025, First Australian Division Memorial, Pozières
The monument pays tribute to the 1st Australian Division, which, during the Battle of the Somme, participated in the capture of Pozières alongside the British 48th Division (South Midland Division) in the summer of 1916. The path leading to this monument corresponds to the first trench of the German line, defended by the Gibraltar blockhouse, the foundations of which are still visible, and which was captured by the Australians on July 14, 1916. The village of Pozières had been heavily fortified by the Germans (a double network of trenches and numerous machine-gun nests) because it was located on a ridge (elevation 160) with a 360° view that was of crucial importance (including for capturing Thiepval from behind). In six weeks, between July 14, the day of the first assault on the Gibraltar site, and September 26, the date of the capture of Mouquet Farm (by British and Canadian forces), the three Australian divisions that took part in the fighting on this ridge suffered 23,000 casualties (killed, wounded, and missing). Pozières is a symbol for Australia (after the war, an Australian village in Queensland was named after it). Indeed, it was by storming this village that the Australian Army Corps (AIF) marked its first major engagement in the Great War.

4월 19, 2025, Gibraltar Blockhouse Ruins
The foundations of the blockhouse, captured by the Australians on July 14, 1916, are still visible. It was actually an old cellar that had been reinforced and accessed through a concrete entrance. The village of Pozières had been heavily fortified by the Germans (defended by nearly 200 machine guns). It was located on a ridge (elevation 160) crossed by a double network of trenches. Two enormous blockhouses dominated the battlefield: "Gibraltar" at the southern entrance (coming from Albert), and "Le Moulin à Vent" at the northern entrance from Bapaume (which would not be captured until August 4).

Unveiled in 2002, this 3-meter-high statue depicts one of these musicians, straddling the parapet of his trench, playing his instrument to encourage the soldiers heading into the assault.
