La Brigue is a small community in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region with narrow, cozy streets, nestled in the Alpes-Maritimes. Before the Treaty of Paris, which followed the conclusion of the Second World War, La Brigue was part of the province of Cuneo with the name of Briga Marittima. After 12 February 1947, the date of the treaty, it was ceded together with the Morignolo hamlet from Italy to France.

The chapelle Notre-Dame-des-Fontaines, or sanctuary of Our Lady of Fontan, is located very close to the Italian border and welcomes around 12,000 people a year. The name comes from seven local springs that flow from the rock. The sanctuary is famous for a huge 15th century fresco, the "Last Judgment" by Giovanni Canavesio, which gives it the nickname "little Sistine Chapel of the Alps". The church itself dates back to the 12th century. As with other river springs on site, this was a sacred site long before Christianity took hold in the region; Roman coins and other votive offerings have been found nearby. It is not always open and, if you wish to visit it, I recommend that you obtain information at the tourist office in La Brigue.
