One of the wonderfully told stories about the two protagonists, "Don Camillo and Peppone," conceived by the Italian writer Giovanni Guareschi, also involves the Virgin Mary. Peppone's youngest son is seriously ill, so one evening the communist mayor sets out for the church with five large candles. Light them in front of this one over there, who doesn't practice politics." After he leaves, Don Camillo—who, as always, is conversing with the crucified Christ—begs him "not to be harsh with him." The dialogue continues: "And why should I?" whispered Christ. "By honoring my mother, he fills my heart with gentleness. I'm only a little displeased that he called her 'that one.'" Don Camillo shook his head. "You didn't hear well," he objected. "He said, 'Light them all before the Blessed Immaculate Virgin in that chapel over there.'" (Giovanni Guareschi in "Five and Five")
