The Obermatsch and Untermatsch castles were probably built and inhabited by the bailiffs of Matsch in the 12th century. In 1297, as part of a family division, the castles were divided between Egino IV and Ulrich II, with Egino IV receiving the upper castle. Obermatsch probably represents the older building, since the lower castle is mentioned for the first time from this point in time. In 1309 Egino IV finally killed his cousin Ulrich II because he is said to have molested his wife. 1358 attacked Ulrich III. Obermatsch Castle, destroyed it and wiped out this older line of the family with his cousins Hartwig and Johann. In 1537 Obermatsch Castle came into the hands of the Counts of Trapp von Matsch, who still own it today. Due to the difficult geographical location for living, the castle was probably abandoned early on.

At the end of the Berka Valley the path splits and on the right you go steeply up to the castle ruins. After the strenuous climb you will be rewarded with a great view. If you have brought your own food, it is worth taking a break and enjoying this panoramic view.
