The Fish Fountain is located in front of the south-east corner of the New Town Hall on Marienplatz. At this point there was already a groundwater scoop and draw well in the early 14th century. In 1954, the current fountain was redesigned using three surviving bronze butcher journeyman figures. The figures of the butcher's boys refer to the "butcher's jump" carried out up to the beginning of the Second World War. After they had been acquitted - i.e. had completed their training - the butcher apprentices threw themselves into the well on Shrove Monday, were vigorously submerged and additionally poured with water from buckets. Every year on Ash Wednesday, the "purse washing" takes place at the fountain. Since 1426 it has been customary for the head of the city to wash the empty city purse in the fountain. This is to ensure that it is well filled again in the following year. To be on the safe side, this exercise has been continued to this day, although it has apparently not been successful.

There has always been a fountain on Marienplatz. The first, whose exact location is no longer known, dates back to 1318. In 1343, the "Citizens' Fountain", later also known as the "Market Fountain", was built on the site of today's Fish Fountain. It was replaced by the Fish Fountain designed by sculptor Konrad Knoll, which was completed between 1862 and 1865. Knoll's fountains were once decorated with bronze dolphins and lion heads spouting water.

The fish fountain is a popular meeting place on Marienplatz directly in front of the New Town Hall. It is also known for the annual purse washing and the so-called butcher's jump. The first fish fountain was built between 1862 and 1865, but the fountain has only existed in its current form since 1954 (source: muenchen.de).
