A church built by the Wittelsbach family had stood on the edge of the former residence since 1240. With the growth of the city and population, it was decided in the 15th century to build a new, more representative church.
The Munich master builder Jörg von Halspach (also known as Jörg Ganghofer) was commissioned to build the brick building. Only 20 years passed from the laying of the foundation stone in 1468 to the completion of the church - at that time a rapid construction progress.
