The glockenspiel at the New Town Hall on Marienplatz attracts many tourists. Every day at 11:00 am and 5:00 pm it plays its melody. In summer also at 12:00 p.m
It consists of 32 life-size figures and 43 bells.

Architecturally, the magnificent neo-Gothic building of the New Town Hall dominates the north side of Marienplatz and is the seat of the Lord Mayor. Its tower offers a great view and houses the famous carillon, which is a real crowd puller.

What many people don't know: The New Town Hall on Marienplatz is not as old as it looks. It was only completed in 1905. Around the turn of the century, Neo-Gothic was a popular architectural style, and the Paulskirche on Theresienwiese was built at the same time, by the same architect: Georg von Hauberrisser, who submitted his design for the New Town Hall when he was only 25.

More than 600 city officials work in the 400 rooms of the building, which cannot only be viewed from the outside. Many historic rooms are open to the public, and the mayor's office can also be visited - but only on open house days.

All year round, however, for a small entrance fee you can climb the town hall tower, which offers an excellent view of the old town. In contrast to the tower of Old Peter, you don't have to climb any stairs. A lift takes you up to the viewing platform of the 85-metre-high tower, at the top of which the Munich Child watches over the city.

Tower ascent - all-year opening times:
Monday to Friday: 10 a.m. - 8 p.m
Saturday: 10am - 4:30pm
Sunday, public holiday: 10 a.m. - 2:30 p.m
Last ascent 15 minutes before closing.
Temporary closures possible.

Closed on: 01/01, Shrove Tuesday, 01/05, 01/11, 25/12, 26/12
