The Stuhlmann fountain is a real eye-catcher. The copper and bronze allegory stands on the Platz der Republik with a view of the Altona town hall. The fountain, designed by the Berlin sculptor Paul Türpe (1859 to 1944), is considered one of the most beautiful monuments in Hamburg. In the early 1990s, it was so dilapidated that it had to be hidden behind a wooden siding. The city did not want to spend any money on the renovation. So the Holsten brewers came up with a clever plan: They offered to finance the restoration if in return they could cover the Altona town hall with an advertising poster for several weeks. The city agreed to the deal.

The symbol of the fighting centaurs is fish. In fact, until 1937, the city of Altona ran out of rank for the Hanseatic city of Hamburg. After 1937, Altona suddenly belonged to Hamburg (Greater Hamburg Act) and the citizens of Altona learned this from the newspaper, they did not like it. Altona was no longer a city but only a part of Hamburg. The fountain symbolizes the former city of Altona, which in the past was much more permissive and tolerant than Hamburg.

The founder of the Altona gas and water works, Ludwig Günther Stuhlmann, bequeathed money to the city of Altona in his will, combined with the wish to use it and a. to build a representative fountain that should bear his name. The monumental Stuhlmann Fountain, the figures of which were designed by the Berlin sculptor Türpe, was inaugurated in 1900. It shows two fighting centaurs who symbolize the competing port and fishing cities of Hamburg and Altona. In the course of the new construction of the Altona train station, the fountain was moved to the station depression in the 1970s. The restored fountain has stood on Republic Square since 2000.
