The (also the) Great Sphinx of Giza in Egypt (Arabic أبو الهول, DMG Abū l-Haul) is by far the most famous and largest Sphinx. It represents a lying lion with a human head and was probably built in the 4th dynasty during the reign of Chephren (around 2520 to 2494 BC, according to other sources 2570 to 2530 BC).

Because the famous Sphinx stands directly in front of Khafre's pyramid, many researchers believe that Khafre also built it. The Sphinx is the largest sculpture erected in antiquity. The Sphinx is almost 60 meters long and 20 meters high, as high as four giraffes stacked on top of each other, and 73 meters long, as long as five buses stacked in a row. The Sphinx of Giza was created from a huge block of limestone, or rather, was carved out of a limestone cliff. For most of its history, this structure was buried in sand, which, incidentally, also protected it. That's why it is so well preserved. Some researchers believe the figure represents Pharaoh Khafre himself. Others think the sculpture is of the sun god Ra. In any case, the Sphinx is supposed to guard the pyramid, that's for sure. In ancient Egypt, the Sphinx was a mythical creature in the shape of a lion with a human head.
