St. Nicholas is the oldest Catholic church in the city of Kiel. It is a provostry church. The construction of St. Nicholas Church was begun in 1890 as Kiel's first Catholic new church since the Reformation. It was built in the immediate vicinity of the Kiel Town Hall as a three-aisled basilica brick building in neo-gothic style with polygonal apse and consecrated in 1893 by Bishop Bernhard Höting from Osnabrück.
