The Klaus Groth Fountain is located directly on the Kleiner Kiel 😉...

A sign provides the visitor with the following information about Klaus Groth, his house and the burial place:
This fountain was erected in 1912 by the Kiel Council in memory of his honorary citizen Klaus Groth (* in Heide on April 24, 1819, + June 1, 1899 in Kiel) by the Kiel sculptor Heinrich Mißfeldt (1872 - 1945).

Klaus Groth is regarded as the founder of the new Low German literature. His volume of poetry -Quickborn- published in 1852 made him and his poetry known.

The fountain shows scenes and verses from well-known poems by Groth as well as the coats of arms of Heide and Kiel.

Klaus Groth lived in Kiel from 1853 until his death in 1899. In the place of his house in Schwanenweg, near the Literature House and the Old Botanical Garden, there is now a hospital that was founded by the German Red Cross, the "Quickborn" house. His grave is in the Kieler Südfriedhof.

After 90 years, the fountain was renovated in 2002 with funds and on the initiative of the Kiel Civic Foundation and with the help of other sponsors.

In the Ratsdienergarten directly on the Kleiner Kiel there is a monument to the Low German poet Klaus Groth (1819-1899), which is 13.5 meters wide and four and a half meters high, and has monumental dimensions.
The larger-than-life bronze sculpture of the poet is framed by a fountain made of shell limestone, which shows scenic motifs from various works by Klaus Groth.
There were already ideas for a monument during the poet's lifetime, because as a long-time honorary professor at Kiel University he was very closely connected to the city and was made an honorary citizen on the occasion of his
80th birthday. When the beautification association planned a representative fountain for the city a few years later, both concerns were combined on the recommendation of Mayor Paul Fuß.
The sculptor Heinrich Mißfeldt was commissioned and designed the fountain, which is now considered his main work. It was inaugurated in 1912, the same year as the equally impressive sword bearer fountain in front of the newly built town hall. During the Second World War, the bronze figure was dismantled and was to be melted down. After the war, it was discovered in a scrap yard in Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg, where its exact origin is unknown. The city of Kiel bought it back for the material value and ceremoniously unveiled it at its old location in June 1949.
