Like a green wreath, the ramparts surround the south of the old town. The Lübeck waterways enclose and flow through the tree-lined ramparts. Until the 18th century, the fortifications served to protect the city. When this was unnecessary, they began with the beautification of the ramparts, first in 1765 by all-planting, then in 1779 with the planting of exotic trees such as trumpet tree and red cedar tree. The paths on the ramparts and on the Wallfuß offered then as today charming walks with a view of the old town.
In the middle of the 19th century Peter Joseph Lenné was commissioned to redesign the ramparts to compensate for the incision in the Lübeck-Büchener railway. Extensive changes in the waterways and traffic routes, however, only make its impact as a quiet landscape echo. But the innovations have a strong appeal: around 1910, the sports complex Buniamshof, the open-air stage and the playground at the Kaisertor.
