The Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre church is located in the shadow of the oldest tree in Paris, on the René Viviani square, in the heart of the Quartier Latin. Its construction began in the 12th century, on the foundations of a 6th century church. This church is considered one of the oldest in the capital.

Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre is one of the few preserved in Paris Romanesque churches. It is located in the center of the city on the Rive Gauche opposite Notre-Dame.

Two strategically important Roman roads meet at the church: the Rue Saint-Jacques as part of the Cardo and the Rue Galande, the presumed beginning of the road to Burgundy. The Saint-Julien was founded in the 6th century as a hospice and chapel dedicated to Julianus Hospitator; as early as 582 she is mentioned by Gregory of Tours. At the time of the Merovingians she was used as a funeral chapel.

In the Norman raid 886 Saint-Julien was destroyed. In 1045, King Henry I donated it to the cathedral chapter of Notre-Dame, which was still in ruins in 1130, and passed it on to the Abbey of Longpont around 1120. The monks of Longpont established a priory here and restored the building between 1170 and 1225: the apse dates back to 1175, the nave from the 13th century.

In the following years Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre played an important role in the intellectual life of the Latin Quarter. Here, the rectors of the Sorbonne were elected, and until the plundering of 1524, the meetings of the University took place here.

Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre may appear compact Romanesque, but most of the medieval details are already Gothic, which is not surprising since this Parisian church was built at the same time as the great Gothic cathedral Notre-Dame. The additional name le-Pauvre (French: "the poor") indicates that it differs from the cathedral less in terms of period style than in terms of price.[1] It is located in the center of the city on the Rive Gauche opposite Notre-Dame.
