The Pantheon is an ancient temple in Rome from the 2nd century AD.

It is a rebuild of an earlier pantheon on this site that was destroyed by fire in 80. Pantheon (Greek: πάς pas = any / θεός theos = god) means "(consecrated to) all the gods". The Pantheon is one of the best-preserved Roman buildings in the world. The building owes this to the fact that it was transformed into a church in the 7th century and has been continuously used and maintained. The Pantheon is still in use as a Roman Catholic Church and is dedicated to Saint Mary and the Martyrs. It has the ecclesiastical honorific title basilica minor.

The vast majority of people buried in the Panthéon were only transferred there many years after their death. For example, the body of Alexandre Dumas, who died in 1870, was moved to the Panthéon in 2002 - almost 130 years after he was buried in his hometown.

Panthéonisation remains an important process in French cultural policy to this day. Proposals for the inclusion of a person in the Panthéon are submitted by the National Assembly. The final decision can only be made by the French President.
