The tree marks approximately the place before the Elstertor, on which Martin Luther burned on 10 December 1520 before Wittenberger students the papal "Canonischen rights" and the Bannandrohungsbulle "Exsurge Domine" of the pope Leo X.

From the Augusteum, Collegienstraße leads east to a roundabout.
On the north side of the roundabout stands the Luther Oak. In 1520, Luther is said to have burned the church laws and the papal bull "Exsurge Domine" (Arise, Lord), which threatened him with excommunication.
Luther responded to the bull with the text "On the Freedom of a Christian".
The first Luther Oak was felled in 1813 and replaced by the current one in 1830.
