    The Althamburg Memorial Cemetery in the Ohlsdorf cemetery is a plateau-like complex that is closed off by high embankments and is tiered with elaborate stairs towards the main entrance to the cemetery. The paths are laid out in a cross shape and lined with crypts and individual graves. These areas are reserved for distinguished Hamburg personalities who have no relatives and whose gravesites have expired.
    The entire memorial cemetery complex is overlooked at the highest point by a figure of Christ made of light marble, which Xaver Arnold created in 1903–05. Originally, the figure was supposed to be at the center of a number of other figures, which, however, were not realized. The larger-than-life Christ in a long robe stands on a high pedestal and has his right hand raised in blessing. When designing the robe, special care should be taken to ensure that it is as simple and clear as possible and as heavy and full of folds as was often seen in sculptures at that time. When the figure was inaugurated on July 22, 1905, the response from the population was extremely great.

      Directly at the main entrance, the larger-than-life figure of Christ made of white marble stands on a sandstone staircase above the Old Hamburg Memorial Cemetery with its columned yews.
      The preaching figure of Christ is probably the most noticed statue in the Ohlsdorf cemetery and is considered his calling card. It was unveiled in 1905.

      The Christ statue was created by the Swiss sculptor Xaver Arnold (*1848; †1929). His name is stamped into the base of the statue along with the year 1904. A small plaque on the base commemorates the donor: gift from Friedrich Wencke, Hamburg 1904.
