The water tower at Ohlsdorf Cemetery is located on Cordes Allee on a high part of the cemetery site. With its historicizing design, it looks more like a sacral building or part of a castle complex. The tower forms an orientation point for the cemetery visitors on the main axis of the older cemetery area.

Thirty meters high, slender, and featuring typical architectural elements of its era: the white and brown water tower stands proudly on Cordesallee. The avenue is named after Johann Wilhelm Cordes, who, as construction manager and later director of the cemetery grounds, designed the tower, which was built in 1898. For over twenty years, the tower served as a water reservoir until the cemetery was connected to the city's water supply.

After years of neglect, the dilapidated water tower underwent its first restoration in 1990. Damage to the plaster, base, and upper timber framing necessitated further repairs. Determining the original colors for the new paintwork proved particularly challenging, but this was ultimately achieved. Today, the tower once again appears as it did in Johann Wilhelm Cordes' time.
