    The name Strypemonde comes from a wide stream, the Strype, which flowed into the sea here in the Middle Ages. Like other streams, the Strype was dammed to protect the land behind. Parts of the estate still remind us of this today: Sint Pietersdijk and Noorddijk, with stream meadows in between. Remains of old broken dikes are still clearly visible.

    The pond in front of the house; "de Schaapskooy" is actually a wheel (remains of a former dike breach). The hunting lodge at Strypemonde was built in 1930. The former estate had an area of 2000 hectares. In the last century large parts were donated to Natuurmonumenten and the South Holland landscape. The current property now covers 100 hectares.

    There are many special trees in the area, such as the Metasequoia glyptostroboides. Here you will find a number of oak species that have come from far away. The tongue fern also occurs here.
    The former owners of the estate were shipowners, they brought many cuttings and seeds from abroad and these exotics and their offspring are still thriving. The various old trees make the Gutswald a popular place to stay for tawny owls, long-eared owls and woodpeckers, among others. In autumn you can find many mushrooms on the old, dead tree trunks.

    The area, with the exception of the private area, is managed by Natuurmonumenten and is freely accessible. You can access the area via the Kreekpad or the Tenellaplas Visitor Centre.

      Built in 1937-1938 to a design by architect J.W. Janzen on the remains of St. Pietersdijk, which originally served as a country house and hunting lodge, the freehouse, situated in a landscaped park, is the main part of the Strypemonde estate, commissioned by James van Hoey Smith. The left façade of the house, built in the interwar style, features an attached service building with a garage and a game slaughterhouse.

        From an elongated floor plan consisting of three rectangles, a country house was built under glazed, improved Dutch tile gabled roofs with projecting eaves resting on carved studs. The facades, constructed in large-format yellow bricks, predominantly feature straight-closed facade openings with wider lintels. A crawl space is located beneath the entire building.
