The mosaic "The development of the trunked animals" was on display in the pachyderm house for over 30 years and is now being recreated on the way to the giraffe path. It consists of more than 500,000 mosaic stones. When the pachyderm house was opened in 1989, visitors were able to see the gigantic mosaic for the first time: 4.42 m high and 17.53 m wide. The Berlin artist Ortraud Lerch (1939-2013) created it, the picture cost around 524,000 GDR marks at the time. The mural is one of the last works of art created in the GDR and is still one of the largest surviving mosaic images in the capital. Apparently, the artist Ortraud Lerch used the fantastic pictures of the Czech draftsman Zdeněk Burian (1905-1981) as a template for her wall mosaic. He was considered one of the internationally best-known draftsmen and graphic artists of prehistoric animals, including the book "Primeval Animals", which was first published in German in 1956.
In order to continue to preserve the cultural heritage for the public, it was removed bit by bit during the conversion of the elephant enclosure last summer. The mosaic panels were prepared by hand over the winter by the mosaic restorer Joana Pomm and her team. For a few weeks now, the individual parts have been put back on the wall and the work of art appears in new splendor.
