Varde is an old city. One does not know the exact age, but one can certainly trace the city back to the early Middle Ages, the city is mentioned here in scriptures. In 1442, Varde Handelsstadt got privileges and was able to celebrate in 1992, 550 year trading city anniversary.

Although Varde has been hit by several major fires over the years, the last in 1821, there are many well-preserved buildings here. e.g. the Sct. Jacobi Church on the market, the Kampmandske Gaard, the Palludanske Gaard, the Schultz'ske Gaard and Silladsens Hus at the market. Many roads are still as in the Middle Ages and you can see here that many houses have retained their characteristic appearance.

The complex in Arnbjerg forms a beautiful setting around the ever-growing tourist attraction "Minibyen". It is a miniature version of the old town of Varde, which has largely disappeared because the inhabitants of Varde had an unfortunate hand with fire at the beginning of the 18th century.

After the merger of Varde, Blåbjerg, Blåvandshuk, Ølgod and Helle Kommune in 2007, Varde is the natural center in the new municipality and stands there as a cozy and living commercial city with good shopping possibilities.
