About three kilometers northeast of the Clausthal-Zellerfeld district Zellerfeld is located directly on the leading to Goslar Highway 241, the Great Kellerhalsteich. The dam of this well-known under the name Mittlerer Kellerhalsteich water body was created in 1724 mainly from the material of about 90 years previously built predecessor dam, which was located about 100 meters above the present building. The dam is about 15 meters high and 280 meters long and its construction was done in the then latest dam construction technique.
The Great Kellerhalsteich once served to supply the mines around Zellerfeld and Bockswiese with water to power various technical facilities. For this purpose, the water could be directed both via the Zellerfelder Kunstgraben in the direction of Zellerfeld and via the Kellerhalser Graben into the mining area near Bockswiese. Surrounded on three sides by dense coniferous and mixed forest, the pond is about 290 meters long and about 250 meters wide. Its maximum storage space is 474,000 m³. Thus, the Große Kellerhalsteich next to the Oderteich, the Prinzenteich and the Hirschler pond belongs to the largest Upper Harz mining.
Today, the Große Kellerhalsteich serves to supply the nearby town of Clausthal-Zellerfeld with drinking water. For this reason, you can not bathe in this pond. The catchment area of the Große Kellerhalsteich is also a water protection area.
