It is one of the Upper Harz Ponds and was a reservoir that served as a water supply and reservoir for the ore mines in the area. It was created by Upper Harz miners in the mid-16th century, and the dam was later expanded to its current size. Its maximum storage capacity is 62,000 m³, and its dam is approximately 10.5 meters high. It was also known as the New Eschenbach Pond.

The Obere Eschenbacher Teich is a reservoir that was used to supply water and to store water for the ore mines in the area. It was laid out in the middle of the 16th century. Today the dam is around 7.70 m high and around 110 m long. Behind it the water accumulates over a length of approx. 250 m and a width of 90 m.
