The Franciscans arrived in Kilkenny more than seven centuries ago, built St Francis Abbey in the heart of the city and began brewing beer in the 14C.

When John Smithwick moved to Kilkenny to make a living in the early 18th century, the penal laws against Catholics were in full swing. Therefore, he could neither own property nor run for office. Nonetheless, soon after arriving in Killarney he started running a brewery with Richard Cole. It was on land Cole had leased in 1705 from the Duke of Ormond, who lived at Kilkenny Castle.

In 1710, John Smithwick founded the brewery of the same name, which to this day produces Ireland's most popular ale, a so-called Red Ale, which tastes a little milder than Guinness Stout. On a nice and interesting guided tour there are many anecdotes to be heard and of course the beer to be tasted.

Although Ireland is known for its Guinness, a Kilkenny beer is in no way inferior to it. Until 2013, this was traditionally brewed at St. Francis Abbey in Kilkenny. Today the main brewery is in Dublin, which does not mean that the traditional monastery remains unused. At Smithwick's Experience Kilkenny, visitors can take an engaging walking tour that introduces them to the art of brewing beer.

Smithwick's is the official name. The beer is exported under the name "Kilkenny", which is better known to many in Germany.
