Oskar Schindler died impoverished in Hildesheim in 1974 and was buried here at his request. During World War II, together with his wife Emilie, he saved around 1,200 Jewish forced laborers who worked for him from the Holocaust. His story became known worldwide through Steven Spielberg's film "Schindler's List", which was released in cinemas in 1993.

After his death in 1993 he was honored with the title "Righteous Among the Nations" by the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial.
