Through the Zion Gate you leave the Armenian Quarter of the Old Town towards Mount Zion (Dormitio). On the outside are innumerable bullet holes, which originate from the 1948 Revolutionary War.

In 1540, Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent had the Zion Gate in the south of the ring wall of the old town. From here, the visitor enters the Jewish quarter of the old town. The Zion Gate lies between the Jaffa Gate and the Dung Gate. Above the entrance there is a hole through which attackers could be doused with hot liquids, according to tradition tar was mainly used. Similar to the Jaffator, the entrance is also constructed at a 90° angle to withstand an eventual massive rush and cause congestion among enemy troops, but also to make it impossible or at least difficult for larger weapons or vehicles to penetrate .

Gate towards mount Zion. From the top (part of the ramparts walk) the view over to the church on the mount is best. Also always interesting to see car drivers mastering the 90° bends in the gate (as many private parking for inhabitants of the old city are behind this gate).
