The Franciscan chapels are partially on the Lithostrotos, in the square on which Ponitius Pilate Jesus delivered, so that the Jews could crucify him. Here the crown of thorns was put on him and the purple mantle thrown over.

Actually known as "Lithostrotos", the stone pavement is located in the basement of the Ecce Homo Convent next to the Franciscans. However, this is the pavement of the Roman market square from the time of Emperor Hadrian. It is likely that these cobblestones were originally in the courtyard of the opposite Antonia Castle, where the trial of Jesus took place. Pontius Pilate was a guest in King Herod's castle.

In the article "The Monastery of the Flagellation," Heinrich Fürst OFM and Gregor Geiger OFM describe the chapel as follows: "The Chapel of the Flagellation is traditionally considered the beginning of the Via Dolorosa, the Way of the Cross (...) The chapel was renovated in medieval style between 1927 and 1929 by the Franciscan architect Antonio Barluzzi. The three stained-glass windows depict the Flagellation, the Washing of Pilate's Hands, and the Triumph of Barabbas. The dome above the sanctuary depicts a crown of thorns interspersed with glass roses. Through these, subdued light falls into the church—even in the agony of death, the faithful have hope for light."
