The cathedral square was called Hofplatz or Burgplatz until secularisation. Only the small area in front of the chapter house was called Domplatz. Then the new Bavarian rulers named the entire area Karolinenplatz in honor of the then Queen Karoline. It was only after the end of the monarchy that the name Domplatz gradually became common and became the official name of the square in 1949.

The Renaissance buildings of the old court and the baroque ensemble of the new residence are located on the cathedral square. As a result, with the Romanesque and Gothic components of the cathedral, you have a view of four stylistic epochs of art at the same time.

The gradient of the square only arose as a result of the lowering of the level of the cathedral square in the years 1777 and 1778, which made steps to the portals necessary. This lowering of the level was necessary in order to create direct access to the city center of Bamberg. Previously, the gate at the so-called "Torschuster" was the only access to Domberg. Two canons’ curiae had to give way for the two new access roads from the east. Since then, a wall has formed the east end of the cathedral square in its place.

The four-towered Imperial Cathedral is the heart of the city and the most important work of art. This goes back to the church foundation of Heinrich II, who founded the diocese of Bamberg in 1007. Today's cathedral dates back to 1237.

The four-towered imperial cathedral is the heart of the city and the most important work of art in the surrounding area and dates back to the church foundation of Henry II, who founded the diocese of Bamberg in 1007. Today's cathedral dates back to 1237.
The Old Court with its unique inner courtyard adjoins the cathedral and heralds the Renaissance era of the 16th century. The cathedral building hut and the historical museum are located here today. On the other side is the Diocesan Museum, equipped with the famous imperial cloaks and the papal regalia of Pope Clement II. Opposite on the other side of the cathedral square is the New Residence with the magnificent imperial hall and the state rooms. The same building houses the State Library, home to two world document heritage sites.

Although it is very large, the square is sometimes simply overcrowded. The road running over it doesn't make things any better. The good thing is that you can take in the historic buildings from a panoramic view.
