The Justus Lipsius Tower is a remnant of the first Leuven city walls. The restoration has now been completed and the restored tower was inaugurated at the end of 2023. They want to restore almost all remains of the first city walls.

While the Jansenius Tower on the right bank of the Dijle (across the bridge) is named after an illustrious resident, Cornelius Jansenius, the Justus Lipsius Tower has nothing to do with Justus Lipsius. It received that name much later, in 1860, when the university purchased the former Ursuline Convent and converted it into the Justus Lipsius College.
The tower previously stood on the grounds of the Ursuline Convent, which was banned by the French in 1798. It formed the very tip of a plot of land purchased by the Order of Saint Ursula in 1659.
