From the seventeenth century, some sights in Leuven were elevated to seven wonders. The number seven was held in high esteem in ancient times, as the seven wonders of the ancient world testify. During the sixteenth century, inspired by the Renaissance, the mythical value of this number was increasingly returned to. In the Duchy of Brabant this came to a climax in 1646, when Erycius Puteanus in Brussels went in search of all kinds of septenarys. After that, seven wonders were also sought in Leuven, in line with the seven legendary noblelines of the city.
in the nineteenth century, the tradition was on the wane. Only a few older inhabitants still knew the seven wonders, several of which had already disappeared. That is why Edward Van Even decided to record them in 1851. The seven wonders he listed are reproduced here. Yet other versions were also circulating. The list below includes the Saint Michael's Church .

The old town of Leuven is definitely worth a visit. The late Gothic town hall is great. Large parts of the city center are traffic-calmed and can only be explored on foot or by bike.
