The Holy Cross Church is the parish church of Jesseren, located at Jesserenstraat 48

The Church of the Exaltation of the Cross was originally a quarter church of the parish of Borgloon. The right of patronage was in the hands of the Count of Loon, who loaned it to his vassals. One of them, Willem van Leeuw, with his brothers Giselbert and Godfried, sold part of the parish rights in 1218 to the Abbey of Herkenrode, which acquired the entire rights in 1258.
In 1578 the tower of the Romanesque church collapsed. Also in later years it was mentioned that the church was dilapidated and had to be restored. From 1720-1723 a new church was built, of which the nave and choir still exist. In 1852, the westwork with the towering tower, designed by Herman Jaminé, was built, and in 1937-1938 the church was expanded with side aisles and a left side choir, designed by Joseph Deré. The church itself is certainly worth a visit, but its location is also great. It is located higher than the immediate surroundings and offers beautiful views of the houses and the village. The church is first mentioned in 1578, when the church tower collapses. After several reports that the existing Romanesque church was too small and urgently needed to be restored, the church was completely rebuilt by Abbess de Mombeek of the Herkenrode Abbey, donor and tithe raiser of the church, in 1720-23, see date on the plinth of the choir. This takes place under the pastorate of G. Baeten. Only the central nave and the choir remain from the church of 1723. The west side was built by H. Jaminé in 1852. The side aisles and left side choir were added in 1937-1938 according to a design by J. Deré. The marbled wood porch altar with painted altarpiece, with blazon of Abbess of Mombeek with motto and date, also dates from the period 1720-1723. The church is located high within the walled cemetery.
