In the Roman period, an extensive road network was developed to connect the cities and to open up the agricultural areas. Various parts of this network have been preserved, including the presumed route of the former Roman road or highway that connected Bavai (capital of the Nervii), Tongeren (capital of the Tungri) and Cologne. This road, also called Roman cobblestone or Oude cobblestone, is for the most part still usable as a road and is still present elsewhere as a plot boundary. From this road there were branches in different directions, the so-called diverticula. In 1996, a limited archaeological investigation was carried out to establish the presence of the Roman road, but this only yielded an approximately 1 meter thick package of colluvium. This did contain some Roman and more recent pottery shards. In the context of the Grootloon land consolidation, the road was upgraded by the Flemish Land Agency with a unique road surface: a two-track concrete road with cobblestones in between.
Seen on a map, the Roman road forms a very straight line from east to west. It intersects several ridges and peaks, making it incised in many places and has a hollow position with high berms with wooded sides. From the road, many views of the area are possible.
