    Fort Hedikhuizen (1862) is part of the Zuiderwaterlinie and was previously used to protect the flood lock. The lock made it possible to allow water to flow from the Maas in a controlled manner. Heusden was thus defended by the flooded land.

      Unfortunately, the fort could not be visited during my hike on January 21, 2018.
      The door to this highlight was tightly closed with a padlock 🔐.

        houses and the inundation sluice started in 1862. Until 1952 the fort near Heusden was used as a fortification and was known militarily as “The work behind the Hoogen Maasdijk”. The building is still almost in its original state. The lock, like the fort, is a national monument and was restored at the beginning of this century. It is now a 'stepping stone' in the local ecological corridor: a habitat where animals can reproduce undisturbed.
