The shield tunneling machine T.R.U.D.E., an acronym for Tief Runter Unter Die Elbe, was the largest tunnel boring machine in the world at the time, with an outer diameter of 14.20 meters. For the extension of the new Elbe tunnel in Hamburg, a 2560 meter long fourth tube was drilled under the river bed of the Elbe between October 1997 and March 2000 using the shield driving method. The tunnel boring machine, weighing over 2,000 tons, removed around 400,000 cubic meters of sand, rubble and stones at an average speed of 6 meters per day.

The TRUDE cutting wheel in "Mixshield technology" - with five spokes that can be walked on from the inside for the first time to change the cutting tools and an independently controllable center cutter under the water table was developed by Herrenknecht from Schwanau and weighs 380 tons alone. The range of very different soil conditions (silt, sand, boulders, tree trunks, duckweed, ...) posed a particular challenge. For this, TRUDE was equipped with 111 paring knives for soft rock and 31 roller chisels for hard rock. Larger pieces of rock could be crushed with a stone crusher.
Thanks to the support of numerous companies and private individuals, the cutting wheel has been exhibited as a technical monument on the grounds of the Museum of Labor in Hamburg-Barmbek since 2001.

The impressive drill head, with which the fourth tube of the Elbe tunnel was driven under the Elbe, is exhibited on the Bert-Kämpfert-Platz on the banks of the Osterbekkanal.
