The "Tunnel under the Citadel" of Besançon is a navigable river tunnel that connects the districts of Rivotte and Tarragnoz and is also used by pedestrians and cyclists. It runs under the citadel - there are two locks on the Terragnoz side.

Planning for such a tunnel began in the second half of the 19th century for the passage of the Rhône Canal to the Rhine. Work began in July 1878, and in 1881 the tunnel was completely bored through with 70 workers and the use of explosives. The inauguration took place at the end of April 1882. Since then, the 5.6 km Doubs loop has been bypassed.
