        If you are traveling along the Doubs on the EV6 and have not planned a stay in Besancon, you will hardly see anything of the city.

                      The Doubs river makes an extreme horseshoe bend in Besançon, creating a very high peninsula, topped by the Citadelle. The bike trail follows the historic canal, which avoids the potentially dangerous 350° turn by way of a genial engineering marvel: a tunnel cutting through the narrowest part of the peninsula, under the citadelle.

                          Cycling in a tunnel with a boat passing by doesn't happen every day. It's worth driving through this tunnel!

                            The tunnel was opened in 1882 - around 50 years after the Rhine-Rhone Canal was opened. The tunnel made it much easier for ships to pass through Besaçon. Its integration into the Eurovelo 6 is a great new use for this special structure. There are not many ships of the 38.5 m Freycinet class on the canal anymore.
