The building was built in the Italian Renaissance style. The facades facing Herrengasse and Strauchgasse were originally supposed to have been made of stone, and the smooth surfaces would have been made of glazed bricks. Since tests did not achieve the desired result, it was decided to build all the facades using cuboid construction. The base and pillars of the house were made from Wöllersdorfer stone, the structures are made from hard Kaiser stone. Margarethner stone was chosen for the wall surfaces. Inside, Wöllersdorf stone was also used for the stairs, while the stock exchange stairs and the pillars were made of polished Untersberg marble. The sculptures are by Hanns Gasser and Franz Melnitzky, the frescoes on the bazaar stairs were created by Carl Josef Geiger. The Donaunixenbrunnen designed by Ferstel was installed in the Herrengasse/Freyung passage (Ferstelpassage), the sculptural decoration of which comes from Anton Dominik Fernkorn.

Between 1856 and 1860, the architect Heinrich von Ferstel built the Palais Ferstel, which was inspired by the Venetian-Florentine style. At that time the Palais Ferstel was one of the most modern buildings in Vienna. Since the building of the Vienna Stock Exchange was not yet completed when it was completed in 1860, the stock exchange rented a room on the ground floor of the Palais.

After the Vienna Stock Exchange moved into the finally completed stock exchange building, the still famous Café Central was opened in the Palais Ferstel - for many decades a meeting place for Viennese poets, thinkers and revolutionaries.
