St. Peter's Church in Vienna, Petersplatz, 1010 Vienna
Church from the 18th century with artistic baroque art and architecture as well as daily organ concerts.
In the Rectory Church of St. Peter, one of the most beautiful baroque churches in Vienna, built between 1701 and 1733 according to plans by Lukas von Hildebrandt. The first church in our city stood here in the 4th century in the area of the Roman camp Vindobona. Since then, services have been held here. Liturgy and pastoral care make St. Peter a spiritual focal point of the city for locals and foreigners - perhaps there is something for you too.

The Vienna church was consecrated to Saint Peter (Peter). Simon, nicknamed Petrus (rock), was a fisherman on Lake Genesareth when he - together with his brother - was called by Jesus Christ to be a "fisherman of men". According to the Catholic understanding, he is the highest apostle, and the two millennia long line of popes - currently Francis - are in his successor. On statues and paintings, Peter is almost always shown with two keys in hand. This attribute refers to the Bible verse in Matthew: “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; what you will bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and what you will loosen on earth will be loosened in heaven ”(Chapter 16, verse 19).
Together with Paul, Peter is also known as the "princes of the apostles"; their common feast day in the saints calendar is on June 29th.

The first St. Peter's Church, from which there are no visible remains today, goes back to late antiquity and is thus the oldest church and parish in the city of Vienna. It was built in the second half of the 4th century, when a barracks building of the Roman camp Vindobona was converted into a basilica-type single-nave hall church. Further renovations followed, the building was later Gothicized, where the nave was divided into three unequaled ships. The tower was rectangular and dreosgeschoßig, at the corners were Fialtürme, which were surmounted by a central, higher tower with cross.
