Large watermill (1553), formerly belonging to the Nassaus, built on a branch of the Demer. Building in the shape of a Latin cross with stepped gables at the four ends; the longitudinal wing perpendicular to the Demer, contains the mill wheel.

Traditional brick and sandstone style with late Gothic reminiscences; still raised shoulder pieces, but already presence of belt moldings at the height of the window sills of the second and third floors; bacon layers in the extension of the central mullions and of the upper sills of the cross-window frames and every two steps ending in a cover plate in the stepped gable; double and single relieving arches with sandstone keystone. Low basket-handle arch door and blunt pointed arch entrance gate with quarter-round profiled sandstone frame.

The Ezeldijkmolen was built around the middle of the 16th century and was later taken over by the Oranje-Nassau's. Striking are the expanse of the building and the stepped gables at the front.

This water mill is one of the many buildings of the Princes of Orange-Nassau. It replaced an earlier mill and was completed in 1553. The building has a typical Flemish Renaissance style and is arranged like a cross. The stepped gables are built in red brick and white sandstone.

The mill remained in operation until 1946. It then served as a lock on the Demer until it was rerouted around the town. During the opening of the Demer in September 2012, an old lock complex was discovered that controlled the water regulation for the mill. The Ezeldijkmolen owes its name to the donkeys that used to walk on the dike of the Demer to deliver bark. This bark then went to the Diest hide evetters.

Function

The mill with three waterwheels had a double function. It was used as a bark and grain mill. Both parts were often leased to separate persons and each had their own entrance and exit. The north side of the building was used as a bark mill. Inside, a thick wall separated the bark from the grain mill. The grain mill consisted of three separate parts: a flour mill, a malt mill and a buckwheat or creupel mill.
