German trenches from the First World War (Dassenaarde)
On top of the Dassenaarde hill in the Dassenaarde nature reserve in Molenstede-Diest lies a trench from the First World War.

Certainly make a short climb to the top of the Dassenaarde hill and go exploring.
You have a beautiful panoramic view there. The Bolhuis, the Bolhuis chapel and an adventurous playground for children nearby.
In good weather you might even see parachutists or gliders.

The only inland trenches from the First World War, constructed by Belgian forced laborers under German supervision. They were dug up to 1.80 meters deep in iron sandstone and have been well preserved. The Germans used them as a training ground for the German Flieger Beobachter Schule van Schaffen, a school for pilots who were trained in flying over, bombing and photographing enemy positions. By removing American oaks and maritime pines, Natuurpunt was able to unite a unique piece of culture and nature, which makes the trenches stand out much better.
