The Obererft is a 8.6 km long, left-hand tributary of the Rhine in Neuss. It is an estuary of the Erft, which was artificially created as early as the 15th century and served to supply the Neuss mills. They made use of a difference in height that the natural estuary of the Erft did not have.

"... The Obererft, called the Erft Canal in the last part, is an 8.6 km long, left-hand tributary of the Rhine in Neuss Mühlen. They made use of a height difference that the natural estuary of the Erft did not have.
The Obererft begins as a junction from the Erft at Selikumer Park west of Reuschenberg Castle.

The Napoleon weir barrage was built in the times of Napoleon to supply the Neuss canals with water. The Obererft flows in a northerly direction and passes under the A 57.
A green corridor belongs to the river. Green woodpecker, nuthatch, bullfinch, goldfinch, kingfisher, owl and bats can be found here. In 2011, a citizens' initiative was able to prevent Schillerstrasse from being extended with a bridge over the Obererft and led through the green corridor.
A pilgrimage route leads along the Obererft to the St. Cornelius Chapel.
From the height of the town hall, the Obererft flows largely piped to port basin 1 of the Neuss harbor, which it flows through as the Erft Canal and then flows into the Rhine ... "
