    Stara trta, the Old Vine, has been growing on the south façade of a one-story house for around 440 years. In 2004, it was entered into the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest vine in the world. Its trunk, which is around 25 centimeters wide, branches out at a height of two meters into horizontal shoots that rest on a trellis and reach a length of 15 meters. The "Blue Kavčina" or "Velvet Black" grape variety, which is particularly resistant to diseases, is one of the oldest in Slovenia. The age of the vine was determined using a probing method with the help of a microscope.

      In the Old Town, on Lent Square, in front of the Oldest Vine, you'll find the more than 450-year-old Žametovka, or Blauer Kölner, grape variety. It's even listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest vine in the world that still bears fine fruit.

                      Hard to believe: This ancient vine has lived here for over 400 years and still bears fruit! A small town with a big history – located directly on the Drava River.
                      Tip: You can sample local wines in the adjoining house – Pinela & Žametovka are worth a try. It's also great for photography in the early morning when the alley is empty.

                          I remember how Maribor claimed this was the oldest grapevine in the world already 40+ years ago, when I was young and the world divided in the "East" and "West" block, with Yugoslavia and the "unallied nations" in between.

                          Yugoslavia is gone, I'm older, the vine still stands. Good to see that some things don't change after all. 😁
