Princess Pauline zur Lippe
(1769 - 1820) is considered to be the most important regent of the Lippe dynasty and a role model in Germany's social affairs for poor relief, job creation, the integration of delinquents, child care and hospital care. In 1895 she founded the first sanatorium for the mentally ill who were previously "kept" in prisons. The story goes that when she stayed in Meinberg for a cure, she knitted and granted audience on this park bench.
Princess Pauline was a witty woman; born 1769 in Ballenstedt in the eastern Harz, the residence of the dukes of Anhalt-Bernburg; in her day Meinberg was Lippe's social figurehead; Curort, Stern, Rose, the count's ballroom; Pauline was often in Meinberg, where she conducted many foreign and domestic political negotiations; when she came to Detmold in 1796, there was great poverty and she took on this task; their social institutions were exemplary.
