The old crane in Lüneburg is something special, because it is still fully functional.

Since 1303 a crane is attested at this point. Again and again it was renewed and rebuilt. Since 1797, today's crane is almost unchanged. His heaviest load in 1840 was a locomotive weighing about 9.3 tons. He does not have to lift that today because the counterweights made of boulders and heavy oak planks have suffered a bit over time. The crane inside can be visited on city tours.

The old crane is a landmark of Lüneburg and symbol of the old port on the stint. It is still fully functional and can be visited on city tours from the inside.

A crane at the site of today's crane at the port of Lüneburg is first mentioned in documents in 1330. He served in addition to the lifting of other goods especially the operation of the Lüneburg Saline, namely on the one hand for shipping the salt produced there (especially on the Stecknitz canal to Lübeck, but also in other cities) and on the other hand for landing the firewood, which for the operation of brewhouses was needed. The crane shared the work with the smaller winches of the neighboring warehouse (then Heringshaus, today called Old Department Store). A decree of the City Council of Lueneburg stipulated which goods had to be lifted by which crane and which fees ("crane money") had to be paid for them.

The original crane has been rebuilt over and over again over the centuries. In its present form, the crane is almost unchanged since 1797. In the winter of 1795, many structures in the harbor were severely damaged by a flood of ice, including the crane and the adjacent bridge. The crane was rebuilt in the summer of 1797 by the carpenter G. P. Hintze under the direction of the land manager Kruse in a new form.

On August 13, 1840, the crane lifted its heaviest load ashore: a steam locomotive for the Ducal Braunschweig State Railway
