Directly in front of the town hall with its neat facade is the Luna fountain on the market square. The old fountain was created in 1530 by an unknown artist.

The Roman goddess Luna can be seen on a column. The fountain statue was erected due to a mistake: In the 16th and 17th centuries, the Lüneburgers believed that the city was once a Roman settlement and that its name was derived from Luna. Instead, Lüneburg comes from the word 'Hluini' for refuge. Nevertheless, the moon goddess stayed in Lüneburg. The figure has already made some jokes. The 62 cm bronze sculpture was stolen in 1970.

In 1972 the Berlin artist Harald Haacke made a replica true to the original. The Roman goddess of the hunt and the moon is enthroned on the fountain with a bow, arrow and crescent moon on her head. The spouting figures on the bowls are particularly beautiful on the Luna fountain.

Bow and arrow are stolen from the moon goddess "Luna". So far, the city had a replacement, but it ran out in 2017. It had to be re-ordered and it could be that the bow and arrow always look a little different.

The so-called Luna fountain is on the market square in Lüneburg in front of the town hall. It is adorned with a bronze statue of the moon goddess Luna with a bow and arrow; the original from 1532 was stolen and melted down in 1970; today's statue is a replica from 1972. The fountain is located a little west of the center of the market. Above two bowls with a diameter of 110 and 64 cm, probably created by Hans Snitker in Gothic times, there is a column and above it a statue of the goddess Artemis. The goddess has also been interpreted as the moon goddess Luna in Roman mythology. Their name was considered the origin of the city name Lüneburg in the 16th century.

The fountain has been the target of vandalism over the years. In 1970 the statue was sawed off at the level of the goddess's ankles and stolen. In 1972 the fountain figure was refilled three times. After a gargoyle was broken off during renewed vandalism, the reconstructed original of the fountain was brought to the Museum for the Principality of Lüneburg (now the Museum Lüneburg). A copy of a fountain stands almost in the middle of the town hall on the market square.
