From the old department store, "Dat Heringshus", on Lünertorstraße opposite the old crane, only the front is left. After an arson attack in 1959, the rest burned down to rubble and ash. After that, the fire brigade was in the new extension for a long time. Today there is a hotel with art and exhibition rooms in the building.
Dat Heringshus - Old department store got its baroque facade in 1742, this is the only thing that was saved after the fire. At the top of the facade sits an onion dome, unusual for northern Germany, with a golden weathervane and an ewer (an approximately 18m long river boat with a shallow draft). Baltic herring and smelt, as well as meat, grain, hops, malt, wine, beer, cloth, wool, skins, wood, metal, glass and spices were sold in the department store.

Right next to the old crane is Lüneburg's old department store, "Dat Heringshus" as it was originally called. Thanks to the salt, the profitable Baltic herring was an important commodity. Traders transported the Lüneburg salt via the Ilmenau to Lübeck and brought herrings with them on the way back were sold together with smelt in the old department store.
