    The Main Square (Glavni trg) is the central square in Maribor. It has been a pedestrian zone since 2020. The first documented mention dates back to 1315. Until the Middle Ages and the first half of the 20th century, the main square was a busy place of trade.

      The main square in Maribor has been extensively redesigned and is now car-free. The old town hall is on the north side, the plague column is central. Nice restaurants with outdoor dining.
      In summary, the place has become a real eye-catcher! 👍

          On November 17, 1929, an airplane (D-974 Raab-Katzenstein KL.1 Schwalbe) crashed during an acrobatic exercise on the main square. The secretary of the Naša krila Aeroclub, Ivo Šestan, and the factory pilot Hans Müller were killed in the accident.

              Maribor's heart beats here: Surrounded by old facades, cafés, and the town hall, the main square is bustling most in the early evening. Perfect for a quick sit and watch life go by after a stroll through the city.
              Tip: The Astoria pastry shop has excellent cakes – it's best to sit outside with a view of the square.

                      Beautiful central square, with a City hall and numerous restaurants and cafes houses. Centre of Maribors pedestrian area.

                      What surprised me was that all the shops closed at noon on Saturday. It seems that most of the trading activity has moved out of the old city into the shopping mall on the other bank of Drava. This is pitty, as the city centre looks a bit abandoned. 😔
